Castrum Abbatis: Castellabate

Castrum Abbatis: Castellabate

Where:
CASTELLABATE
Description:

A splendid village of medieval origin, built in an area inhabited since the Paleolithic era, Castellabate is rightfully included in the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy" network.

Of this place, Joachim Murat once said: "Here, one does not die!"

It dominates from above the bay between Punta Licosa and Capo Tresino, as well as the stretch of coast included in the Marine Protected Area of Santa Maria di Castellabate.

This magnificent panorama is framed by a labyrinth of narrow streets, punctuated by the flying arches of the loggias and multi-level entrances.

It owes its name to Abbot Costabile Gentilcore, the fourth abbot of the powerful Abbey of Cava, who built there in 1123 his Castrum Abbatis — the Abbot's Castle (in italian, "Il Castello dell'Abate" = Castellabate). The historic core of this beautiful village developed around the Castle on Sant'Angelo Hill, and is rich in remarkable religious, civil, and military architecture.

It features five entrances, the main one being from the Belvedere of San Costabile, anciently called "Vaglio", a terrace overlooking the sea that enjoys a privileged view of the Gulf of Salerno, the Amalfi Coast, and Capri.

This breathtaking view, one of the most famous postcards of Castellabate and the Cilento region, pairs beautifully with the incredible historical and artistic heritage of this village. In recent years, it has gained great prominence thanks to major recognitions, such as its inclusion in the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy network, the Blue Flags, and the 5 Sails of Legambiente.

Massive popularity then arrived when Castellabate was chosen as the location for the movie Benvenuti al Sud, leading many to visit after seeing it at the cinema.

However, the truth is that Castellabate deserves to be seen and known not just for a film, but for its art, its history, and its incredible beauty, capable of enchanting anyone—even the The Dandy King who defined such wonder as immortal.
