The Blue Grotto of Palinuro
The University of Cambridge and the University of Pisa have been studying the Blue Grotto of Palinuro for years for its unique geological, flora, and fauna characteristics.
In terms of tourism, it is much less famous than the Blue Grotto of Capri: this does not prevent it from being one of the most beautiful coastal caves in Europe, with the highest value for marine speleology.
It is one of the 35 caves, both emerged and submerged, found in Palinuro. Its name derives from the unreal blue of its waters: located just beyond Punta della Quaglia, it can only be reached by sea. For obvious reasons of protection, only authorized boats can enter the cave, so booking is mandatory.
To welcome the visitor is a majestic entrance arch: from the outside, it seems to lead into a dark tunnel. On the side walls, there is marine flora and fauna that are incredible at these latitudes.
Just look at the water to see, for example, the wonderful shape of the corals that grow luxuriantly. And suddenly, the visitor is invaded by a blinding beam of blue: it is the effect of the refraction of sunlight that filters through a tunnel, giving a simply unique spectacle.
Obviously it is one of the most photographed places in Palinuro: but not even the best of photographers will ever be able to render the effect of what the spectacle of that blue is in real life.
