Castello di San Sergio

Castello di San Sergio

Where:
Centola
Description:

Magnificent historic building between the green hills and the sea of Palinuro, the Castle of San Sergio is by far one of the most beautiful accommodations in the Lower Cilento.

The Casale di San Sergio, an area between the sea, Molpa and the hill of Centola, is mentioned in a precious document of the Royal Chamber of Sommaria of 1484. It also appears in a Spanish fiscal document of 1532.

The construction of the splendid manor dates back to 1532: its mighty walls and quadrangular-based towers with the slits at the four cardinal points refer right from the first glance to certain Spanish architecture, especially the Herrerian style in vogue in the years of construction of the Castle, with its clean volumes, its geometric rigour and the mathematical relationship between distinct elements.

The beautiful rooms retain unique architectural elements, such as stone fireplaces and wooden beams from the 1700s, all restored with extreme care and respect for the original styles.

The well-kept outdoor spaces open the view on a panorama that is nothing short of superb: the Castle was born in the decades following the destruction of Molpa in 1464 by the Saracen pirates, therefore the defensive necessity of its construction is all too clear. The Castle had to have the widest view towards the sea, to sight its dangers. Once the dangers have disappeared, today remains the monumental beauty of a truly unique place, where staying means spending moments that will not be easily forgotten.
