Description:

Punta Licosa is the headland that closes the Gulf of Salerno to the south and opens the way to the Cilento coast.

A marine protected area and a Special Protection Zone, this magnificent corner of the Cilento is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful seaside resorts in the world: its natural habitat holds beauties capable of enchanting any visitor, while its history dates back to the Upper Paleolithic.

The name evokes a world of ancient legends; indeed, Licosa is Leucosia: along with Parthenope and Ligeia, she is one of the mythical Sirens.

The name derives from the Greek Leukòs, meaning white, the same color as the shallows and the water-level rocks that surround the islet.

Due to its flat shape, which closely matches the Homeric description, ever since the Archaic period, the local Greeks themselves localized the myth of the Siren Leucosia on the Island of Licosa. According to the oldest tradition of the Orphic Argonautica, Parthenope, Ligeia, and Leucosia, defeated in song by Orpheus, threw themselves into the sea, where they were transformed into rocks. In Apollonius of Rhodes' Argonautica, however, the cause of their death was Odysseus's insensitivity to their bewitching song: because of this, they threw themselves into the sea, which carried their bodies to various places.

Legend, but also History.

Aleppo pines arrived from the East, and they remain the symbol plant—along with carob trees—of this stretch of the Cilento coastline today, so much so that the silhouette of the Aleppo pines shaped by the wind is perhaps the most famous postcard image of Punta Licosa. Treating yourself to a boat excursion to Punta Licosa is therefore an unforgettable experience, to be done at least once: there is no reason to resist the song of such a beautiful Siren!
