In the main square, a Greek Gate (IV sec. BC.) and the Church of Saint Mary Of Longobards (XI sec. AD): enough to understand that we are in front of one of the most beautiful villages in Campania.
History and landscape merged in a scenery of unparalleled beauty, between sea and mountains, towers and churches.
Perched at 648 meters s.l.m. on a spur of Mount Gelbison in the upper valley of the river Badolato, it has always been a nodal point for trade.
The archaeological finds say that its foundation dates back to X sec. BC.
It is also known that in Roman times it was a garrison on the Salt Way from Velia to the inland.
The first document of the existence of Novi is found in a diploma of 1005, with which the prince of Salerno Guaimario IV makes gift of his possessions to Luca, abbot of the monastery of Santa Barbara, located in territory "de Nobe".
It was the seat of the feud called "di Novi" made up of five "Terre" (Novi, Cuccaro, Gioi, Magliano and Monteforte). Since 1200 Novi has been almost continuously owned by very authoritative feudatories: Gisulfo del Magnia, Tommaso di Marzano, great Admiral of the Kingdom, Antonello de Petruciis, prime minister of king Ferrante of Aragon, Ettore Pignatelli.
The long and complex history of Novi Velia is reflected in its architectural and artistic heritages: the Norman tower, the feudal castle, residence of the baron Tommaso di Marzano, the oldest Lombard castle, transformed by the Celestines into a convent, the churches, chapels and noble palaces.
