The Masseta Coast and the Gulf: Scario

The Masseta Coast and the Gulf: Scario

Where:
Scario
Description:

Scario is by far one of the most beautiful villages on the Cilento coast.

is situated in an enchanting geographical position, where the Masseta Coast (a Marine Protected Area) gives way to the Gulf of Policastro.

Characterized by the typical architecture of coastal villages, it climbs towards the hill with narrow-walled houses, a feature typical of settlements that had to defend themselves against pirate attacks during the Middle Ages and the Modern Era. The village charms visitors with its narrow alleys, picturesque shops, and stone staircases that descend towards the sea among flowers, ubiquitous cats sunbathing.

It features a splendid seafront bounded by the Church of the Immaculate Conception from which it is possible to admire the final stretch of the coast of Campania, as well as Basilicata with the Christ of Maratea, and Calabria.

The name most likely derives from the Greek Escàrion, which means shipyard. Founded around 1000 BC by indigenous peoples, Scario became Greek around 470 BC.

Due to its position, it quickly developed into a strategic shipyard: located very close to Pixous (today Policastro Bussentino), it marked the southern limit of the Chora of Elea.

Throughout its history, it followed the events of the Lower Cilento: the period of splendor during the Roman era, the arrival of the Byzantines after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, barbarian invasions, and pirate raids. The latter are witnessed by the numerous coastal watchtowers, built precisely to defend against a danger that persisted for centuries.

Even in the sixteenth century, Scario also suffered the onslaught of privateers, first Hayreddin Barbarossa and later Dragut.

Today, Scario is a gem that shines for its beauty and for the high quality of its cultural initiatives it offers: the Ortega Prize, dedicated to the Spanish painter José Ortega (a friend and disciple of Picasso who lived for many years in the nearby village of Bosco), and the Equinozio d’Autunno Festival, which has attracted artists of world-renowned importance to Scario — most notably Patti Smith.

The excursion is suitable for everyone and allows you to savour a unique atmosphere, that is both elegant and traditional.

It is an urban trek perfect also as "phototrekking" due to the scenic beauty of the locations, and as a great shopping tour thanks to the local artisan shops you can visit.

In addition, boat excursions depart from Scario to the Masseta Coast, which features unique beaches that can only be reached by sea.

 In a word, Scario is a must-see!
