When East Comes to South: San Giovanni a Piro

San Giovanni a Piro
Description:

The magnificent hilltop village of San Giovanni a Piro, which enjoys some of the most spectacular views in all of Cilento, has medieval origins and Greek-Oriental provenance. This heritage is revealed by its name, Ab Epirum, which in Latin means from Epirus —a historically significant region shared today between Greece and Albania.

It was here that Basilian monks built the Coenobium of San Giovanni Battista (Saint John the Baptist), which became one of the most important monasteries of Greek monasticism in Southern Italy.

Around the year 1200, these monks also sculpted a statue of the Virgin Mary on the peak of Mount Piccotta. The statue forms a single body with a niche carved directly into the stone, displaying the classic characteristics of Byzantine iconography. This masterpiece is the Sanctuary of Pietrasanta, built on a rocky cliff overlooking the Gulf of Policastro.

The Coenobium of Saint John has long been the heart of the hamlet. Around the middle of the 15th century, Cardinal Bessarion invited the Greek humanist, translator, philosopher, and grammarian Theodorus Gaza (originally from Thessaloniki) to San Giovanni a Piro. Gaza drafted the “Statutes” or “Chapters” of the land of San Giovanni a Piro. In 49 articles, these documents regulated the relations between the Coenobium and the hamlet through rules of Civil, Criminal, Administrative, and Public Security Law.

Like the rest of the coastline, San Giovanni a Piro constantly had to defend itself against dangers and attacks from the sea. The surviving architecture is clear evidence of this: the narrow alleys, leaning walls, and fortified houses were built specifically for defense.

However, this was not always enough: for instance, the notorious pirate Dragut destroyed San Giovanni a Piro during one of his raids, along with many other villages in Cilento.

Even today, the historic center—with its narrow streets, spectacular churches, and green hilly buttresses of Mediterranean maquis—remains a magnificent small jewel.
